Punjab National Bank
Punjab National Bank is serving over 3.5 crore customers through 4540 offices including 421 extension counters - largest amongst Nationalised Banks. It offers a wide variety of banking services which include corporate and personal banking, industrial finance, agricultural finance, financing of trade and international banking. The bank's organizational structure is divided into 4 layers as shown below. The head office is in New Delhi under which are ZNC (Zonal Network Centres). Each ZNC covers a few network centres. Each Network Centre further controls branches under it.
PNB wanted redundancy in their existing network to overcome the huge cable cuts that they had been experiencing in the past. Also, they were looking for an alternative to leased lines to connect their remote sites. PNB earlier had most of its branches connected through leased line circuits as well as ISDN circuits. Later, they chose VSAT as different technology for connectivity. The bank was interested in a kind of connectivity which would provide redundancy to their existing network to overcome the huge cable cuts that they had been experiencing in the past. According to the IT department of PNB, another major challenge in the existing fibre network was its reach, as leased line was not available in many of the remote sites like Yamuna Nagar, Jaghodi, Udhamgarh etc.
Tulip connects a large number of branches for PNB spread all over the country. The robust network supports a number of applications for the bank like Core Banking Services (CBS), mailing clients, Messaging clients, Real Time Gross Settlements (RIGS), treasury operations etc. Tulip also provides internet connectivity to some of these branches.
